ITINERARY
Day 1
LAHAD DATU > KAWAG NATURE LODGE
10.30 am: Pick up at Lahad Datu Airport for your scheduled transfer of 1 hour 20 minutes journey to Kawag Nature Lodge.
11.50 am: On arrival at the Lodge, be greeted at the drop off point by service associates. Take a short walk to the main building for a welcome drink.
Proceed with registration procedure followed by a short briefing of the Lodge facilities and the planned activities during the stay before check-in to your room.
12.30 pm: Lunch.
03.00 pm: Start first activity with a guided jungle trekking with an approximate 2 hours return trekking through river streams and natural sightings of wildlife inhabitants such as birds, macaque and orangutan.
05.00 pm: Return to Lodge to freshen up and relax at your own time.
07.00 pm: Dinner.
08.30 pm: Evening activity will be a night drive experience for an hour in search of nocturnal wildlife.
Day 2
KAWAG NATURE LODGE
05.00 am: Catch the panoramic view of Kawag Sunrise from the highest viewpoint. Trail distance of 1.5 km with an approximate return trekking duration of 1 hour 30 minutes.
08.00 am: Breakfast.
09.30 am: Enjoy guided trekking to waterfall trail for refreshing dip. Trail distance of 2.8 km with an approximate 2 hours 30 minutes return trekking trip into the forest. Along the way, pass by the Limestone Cave and with luck get to catch a sight of bearded pig, orangutan and birds endemic to Kawag Forest.
11.30 am: Return to Lodge to freshen up. Lunch.
03.00 pm: Guided river walk along the Kawag River stream. If weather permits, may go for water tubing activity.
05.00 pm: Return to Lodge for a relaxing time. Free and easy.
07.00 pm: Dinner.
08.30 pm: Optional activity : Guided night walk or free at own leisure.
Day 3
KAWAG NATURE LODGE > LAHAD DATU
06.00 am: Start the day with an early morning birdwatching activity at the Observation Tower. Alternative option: Morning walk along the Kawag Road.
08.00 am: Breakfast.
09.30 am: Optional activity : Guided jungle walk or at free at own leisure.
11.30 am: Return to Lodge to freshen up.
12.00 pm: Lunch.
01.30 pm: Check-out and depart for onward journey to Lahad Datu town. Expected time of arrival at Lahad Datu town 1500 hrs.
ABOUT KAWAG FOREST AREA
KAWAG FOREST
Kawag Forest located in a lowland dipterocarp forest inside the buffer zone II of Danum Valley Conservation Area, it is also part of the Ulu Segama-Malua Forest Reserve. Kawag Forest Area has been identified as a wildlife tourism region under the Sabah Development Corridor. In 2012 and 2013 the State Government regazetted the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve and Malua Forest Reserve to Class 1 Protection Forest Reserve respectively to protect more high conservation value area. The landscape of Kawag Forest consists of steep interconnecting small ridges with narrow top and valley floor.
ACCOMMODATION
KAWAG NATURE LODGE
Kawag Nature Lodge is situated in Kawag Forest, one of the many forests that form the vast expanse of Buffer Zone II for Danum Valley Conservation Area in Lahad Datu district, previously known as Kawag Danum Rainforest Lodge.
The alluring architectural design of Kawag Nature Lodge adopted the environmentally friendly concept of minimizing impact on soil and vegetation, at the same time allowing curious wildlife to roam freely in the vicinity. This is possible by constructing all rooms and the main building aloft, connected by hoisted boardwalk.
It is not uncommon to see deer, civet, monitor lizard and even elephants foraging on the ground beneath the Belian boardwalk. Belian timber, a strong and beautiful hard wood perfectly integrated the lodge with its tranquil natural surroundings.
There are 20 rooms (10 Standard Rooms and 10 Deluxe Rooms) with balcony equipped with either aircon or ceiling fans at the lodge distinguished by the different view and surrounded by landscape that values the natural tropical forest. There are options for twin sharing or double room. There are power plugs and slippers in each room for the convenience of guests. Meanwhile, the open concept dining hall able to accommodate 40-50 people in one time.
Although Kawag Nature Lodge only equipped with basic facilities and amenities, but it offers 24/7 power supply to visitor. Fresh and clean water resources are derived from water catchment.
